Driving on the Beach
Driving on the beach can be a wonderful holiday experience, but for your own safety, and the safety of other beach users and local wildlife please:
  • Keep to the speed limit of 40kph on Flinders Beach and 60kph on Main Beach.
  • Slow down when other vehicles are approaching.
  • Slow down when approaching stationary vehicles.
  • Slow down when you're approaching creek crossings (if unsure, get out and survey the crossing, checking ledge depth and hardness of sand).
  • Follow tyre manufacturers' recommendations for tyre pressure when driving on sand.
  • Respect resting sea birds by slowing down and trying to avoid disturbing them.
Do not:
  • Drive in the water.
  • Drive in a reckless manner.
  • Drive on any sand dunes, in rehabilitation areas or in vehicle restricted areas.
  • Park your vehicle on any sand dunes or within the area of beach used for driving.
  • Drive on the beach at high tide.
  • Don't forget you need a permit to drive on island beaches. You can get one at the Visitor Information Centres at both Dunwich and Cleveland.
